Jan. 7 – Cory Dale Chastain, 38, 106 Dacus St., Williamston was arrested for possession of marijuana after officers were dispatched to Cricket Wireless, 310 E. Main St. in reference to a shoplifting incident. According to reports, Cricket Wireless employees advised officers that they saw a white female, later identified as Amber Bagwell, concealing items in her coat without paying for them. While officers were speaking to employees, a white male at the counter, later identified as Cory Chastain, stated if “she stole anything I will pay for it.” While Officer Eichelberger spoke with Bagwell, Sergeant Mulz made contact with Chastain and ask him if he had anything on him and he stated no.
After being asked three times to stand up so he could be frisked for weapons, Chastain stated he had a knife and grabbed for his pocket. Chastain was told not to grab for the weapon and keep his hands up, which he did for approximately 15 seconds and then he began putting his hands back toward his pockets and turning toward the officer while she was attempting to remove the knife. Reports state Chastain displayed very unpredictable behavior and due to the unpredictableness, he was detained and escorted out of the building along with Bagwell. During a terry frisk, a knife was located in his right vest pocket along with some pills which Chastain stated were “Xanax belonging to her” referring to an individual who drove he and Bagwell to the Cricket Wireless store. Also on Chastain’s person was a small multicolor container which had less than a gram of a substance which field tested positive as marijuana, inside.
During a search of Bagwell, officers found a “monkey pop socket” on her person which a Cricket Wireless employee identified as more of their merchandise. Bagwell also had an outstanding warrant through Anderson County Sheriff’s Office. Amber Lanette Bagwell, 32, 305 Hardy St., Williamston was arrested for the bench warrant. No charges were pressed regarding the shoplifting incident. Both Bagwell and Chastain were placed on trespass notice. Cory Chastain was arrested for simple possession of marijuana and a warrant was being sought for possession of a controlled substance. Both were transported to ACDC without incident.
