The Pelzer Town Council addressed health issues being experienced by the mayor and mayor pro tem by taking the unusual step of authorizing a third member of the Council to preside at meetings when both the other officials are absent.
The role of the third councilman, Councilman Gary Pridmore, will also be tasked with “providing administrative support and oversight when the Mayor and Mayor pro tem are unavailable.” The arrangement takes effect immediately and continues until July of this year. The designation was preceded by assurances that Mayor Roger Scott is proceeding well with his rehabilitation. Scott has been unable to attend a meeting of the Council so far this year.
Mayor pro tem Mike Matthews presided at a budget workshop last Thursday, as well as at Tuesday night’s regular council meeting.
The Council also approved the hiring of a part time employee to assist Mark Vickery in maintenance and grass cutting efforts. The position, which will be advertised, will involve up to twenty hours a week, at a salary of ten dollars an hour.
Councilman Eddie Waits and Pridmore introduced the First Thursday program, which will involve staging events to involve the community in the town. The first event will be on June 6, from 6:15 til 9:00 p.m. Free hot dog plates and karaoke will be the order of the evening. This weekend at the gym the town will host The Spring Thing, with music and food vendors and other activities.
Council also approved seeking bids to completely upgrade the wiring in the community building. The town plans to seek a PARD grant to defray the costs.
