Ronnie “Ron” Alberson

Piedmont – Ronnie Wayne “Ron” Alberson, 73, husband of Becky Durham Alberson for fifty years, passed away Friday, May 28, 2021.

   Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late A.T. “Buck” and Geraldeane Jones Alberson.  A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Vietnam War.  He was retired after 28 years of service as area supervisor with S.C. Educational Television. 

   Ron’s hobby was Amateur Radio.  He designed and built the first two-meter FM (146.34 in and 146.94 out, call sign was WB4PUP) repeater and Antenna in 1970, and placed it in the SCETV building and tower on Paris Mountain.  This was the first two-meter repeater in the upstate.  He also designed and built one of the first 1.2 gig, fully duplex FM Amateur Television repeaters in 2006.  It too was located atop Paris Mountain.  The repeater became a place for long technical discussions and sharing ideas through Ron’s efforts to expand amateur communications for the upstate.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sister, Sharron A. Welch (Butch) of Pelzer; brother, Darrell Alberson (Carol) of Pelzer; special relatives, Dean, Jenny, and Hayden Durham of Easley; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 2, at 11:00 a.m. at Greenville Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Morris Jones

Morris Elmer Jones of Piedmont, 73, husband of Carolyn Naomi Brown Jones, passed away Wednesday, May 26, 2021.

   Born in Travelers Rest, he was a son of the late William Elmer and Nancy Elizabeth Howard Jones. A U.S. Army veteran, he was employed with Southeastern Freight Lines. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Tabernacle.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Morris E. “Morey” Jones, Jr. of Piedmont; daughter, Margaret Nancy Jones “Nan” Childress of Piedmont; brother, Donald Jones of Liberty; sister, Marilyn Porter of Pelzer;  three grandchildren.

Visitation was held on May 28 at Trinity Baptist Tabernacle. The service followed at the church, with burial at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Tabernacle, 824 Piedmont Highway, Piedmont, SC 29673.

Fred Barton

Fred Watson Barton of Belton, 90, passed away Sunday, May 30, 2021.

Born in Laurens County, he was a son of the late Odell Jerome and Carrie Bell Vaughn Barton. He retired from Whiteside Construction Company. 

Survivors include sons, Randolph Barton of Belton and Donnie Barton of Spartanburg; daughter, Karen Barclay of Winder, GA; and 12 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 3, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Gray Mortuary. The service will follow at 12:00 p.m. in the mortuary chapel, with burial to be held at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Todd Jeckel

Michael Todd Jeckel of Williamston, 53, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Charles Irvin Jeckel and Shelia Dianne Aiken Blackstone.  He served in the National Guard and was formerly employed by Garrett Brothers Construction.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by daughters, Amber Nicole Riddle of Belton, and Heather Rae Glenn of Anderson; brother, Charles David “Chucky” Jeckel of Williamston; half-brother, Josh Blackstone of Colbert, GA; step-sisters, Kelly Burley of Sharpsburg, GA, and Leslie Blackstone of Anderson; and seven grandchildren.

   A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Helen Wilson

Helen Ruth Wilson of Greenville, 92, of Greenville, SC, passed away May 29, 2021, at Upstate Hospice House, Landrum, following a brief illness.

She was the daughter of the late William (Will) A. Wilson and Ida Mae Allen Wilson. She was the last member of her immediate family. 

She retired from Stone Manufacturing Co.   She grew up in the Friendship Baptist Church and was a member of Augusta Heights Baptist Church after her move to Greenville.  

She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Eva Ann Via of NC, Lynn and George Good of Campobello, Bill and Charley Wilson of Williamston, Steve Wilson of SC.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, June 2, at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, 5600 N. Highway 81, Williamston.

The family will greet friends after the service in the church fellowship building.

Reba Gillespie

Reba Elizabeth Hudson Gillespie of Belton, 85, wife of the late James Edward “Bud” Gillespie, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021.

Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late L.B. and Lois Hiott Hudson. She retired from Gerber Childrenswear and was a member of Bessie Road Baptist Church.

She is survived by son, Stan Gillespie of Belton; sister, Elaine Barrett of West Pelzer; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, two step-grandsons, nine step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 3, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Gray Mortuary.

The service will be Friday, June 4, at 2:00 p.m. in the mortuary chapel, with the burial to follow at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
