According to SCDHEC, there have been 22,488 breakthrough cases of COVID-19 in the state since June. Of those, 1,527 fully vaccinated people have been hospitalized and 521 fully vaccinated people have died.

A “breakthrough case” is when a fully vaccinated person later gets the disease they were vaccinated for. According to DHED, no vaccine provides 100 percent protection against infection, so breakthrough cases are not new, and not unique, to COVID-19.
