Following graduation from Greenville High School, he attended The Citadel. Upon his graduation Gene was commissioned a second lieutenant in the US Air Force and served in Vietnam and surrounding countries in 1967-68.

His devotion to his Faith led him to a lifetime of service to his community where he committed his time and treasure. Gene’s calling led him to devote himself to his work as the Business Officer for Furman University, Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Executive Vice President of Thornwell Children’s Home, Blue Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Rotary Club of Greenville, Laurens Chamber of Commerce, and the Laurens Livestock Association.

Gene’s commitment to his family was his guiding light and absolute. That same love was devotion given to his sweetheart and best friend Sylvia Corbin. His kind and gentle ways along with his great sense of humor created a relaxing and warm environment everywhere he went.
