Williamston Town Council held a special called meeting last Thursday (July 25) to vote on a resolution to approve a paving list to be submitted to the Anderson County Transportation Committee (ACTC) for funding.
Six streets were approved to be submitted. Included are: Harbison Drive, “A” Street. “B” Street. Randall Street (including the two circles off Randall Street), Rogers Street, and Prince Street.
The Town currently has been approved for paving of eleven streets including: Anderson Street (between Gossett Drive and Broad Street. Dove Street, Mattison Drive, “C” Street, Attaway Street, Whilden Drive, Lakeview Drive, Payne Drive, Parker Street, Sullivan Street and Lee Street. Work on this project, identified as ACTC 135, will begin in August and is slated to be completed in December.
The Town has also submitted several other streets which are expected to be voted on at the next meeting of the ACTC. Included in (ACTC 139) are South Green Street, Bigby Street, East Church Drive, River Drive, Knight Street and Traxler Street. Estimates on the cost of paving these streets are currently being completed.
The Town will be responsible for meeting a ten percent match in funding for any paving projects that are approved.
Council also approved an employer resolution for participation in the State Insurance Program. The resolution states that the Town’s elected officials will be included in the insurance program.
During the meeting, Mayor Rockey Burgess updated Council on several items.
Burgess said that the Town is currently operating without a trash truck. A loaner has been provided by the Town of Pendleton while repairs are being made to the town’s truck(s). Burgess said all three of the Town’s trash trucks are down with problems including a 1991 truck, a 2007 truck which is having hydraulic problems and the 2019 which has a PTO pump out. The 2019 truck is in the shop and is expected to take several weeks to be repaired, he said.
Burgess said the Council will need to start looking at making a decision on a newer garbage truck. He said they need a larger 25 yard vehicle which will reduce the number of trips to the landfill. The current trucks have to make the trip two to three times and a larger truck would reduce the trip to one.
Burgess also said that the playground area in Mineral Spring Park will be shut down from August to December for removal of the old playground equipment and installation of new equipment.
The old equipment will be removed August-September. Any person or group interested in obtaining the old equipment may submit a sealed bid to the Town, he said. The equipment will have to be removed within 30 days by the winning bidder.
The shelter in Brookdale Park is scheduled for demolition in September. The new shelter equipment is expected to arrive in November, Burgess said.
