Artist rendering of the new Anderson County Detention Center
A groundbreaking ceremony for a new state-of-the-art detention center in Anderson County was held Friday. The outdated jail built in the 50’s will be replaced with a modernized facility following strategic preparation and years of planning by County officials. Currently, the detention center houses more than 400 inmates in a facility intended to hold approximately 240. The new facility will allow 650 inmates to be safely monitored in a pod system under one roof at no additional cost to taxpayers. “We look forward to providing a safe environment for inmates and staff, as well as mental health, addiction resources, and other services that will positively impact these prisoners well beyond their time served,” said Anderson County Administrator Rusty Burns.
