Belton teen fatally injured

Abbigail Callaham, 17 of Belton, was fatally injured in a motor vehicle crash Tuesday morning. Anderson County 911 received a call at around 11 am Tuesday morning regarding a motor vehicle crash on Clamp Drive at Ernest Lane in Belton.
According to reports, preliminary investigation shows that the victim was a passenger in a Chevrolet S10 traveling on Clamp Drive when a large bird, possibly a turkey, flew out of the woods and hit the windshield of the truck. The driver then lost control of the vehicle, ran off the right side of the roadway where he overcorrected, crossed the center line and hit a tree on the left side of the roadway.
According to Coroner Greg Shore, Callaham was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact. The driver was treated on scene and taken to AnMed where he continues to recover.
Anderson County EMS, MedShore EMS, Craytonville Fire Department, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT Team, and Anderson County Office of the Coroner responded to the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing by the Anderson County Office of the Coroner, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and the MAIT Team.
Callaham was the mother of a 4-month-old baby girl.
