Sandra Jo Watkins Ambrose
On October 1, 2024, Sandra Jo Watkins Ambrose, beautiful, bold and beloved, left this life for her next adventure. She had just celebrated her 81st birthday in Asheville, North Carolina where she had lived for several decades. She worked at and retired from Mission Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Williamston, South Carolina to Helen Virginia Prince Watkins and Ralph Watkins. She was the second of their four children, and the first daughter. Sandy is forging a way for one daughter, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.
Sandy was likely the most beautiful and talented majorette, head majorette and drum majorette Palmetto High School had ever seen! AND she taught her little sister to twirl a batton like a professional! Even though she was eight years older than her sister, when she ended up at Palmetto High School, everybody was asking her if she was going to be a majorette like her sister Sandy.
In the mid 1960’s, she met her soulmate and love of her life, Warren Fitzgerald Ambrose. And yes, he was cousin to that fellow named F. Scott Fitzgerald. Sandy and Warren were a loving couple who had an exciting life together. They lived in New York City for several years where Sandy managed the first fried chicken stores in New York, Golden Skillet. She taught herself to speak Spanish, thanks to the New York Library, so that she could communicate with the people who worked at the stores. Warren was one of the original “Mad Men”, working with major advertising agencies in Mahattan, including the one that represented Pepsi when Joan Crawford owned it. If not for Warren, we would not have had the “Marlboro Man”, “Be Sociable, have a Pepsi” nor “Sugar Pops are Tops!” Sandy was not only in love with Warren, but inspired by him. Writing became her guilty pleasure. In the last 3 years of Sandy’s life, she authored and published 25 books, using the pen name Amber Grace. Her sister had the pleasure of helping her write 3 of them about the South Carolina Lowcountry, and loved seeing her excitement and pleasure as she accomplished those projects.
Sandy is also survived by five nephews and multiple great-nephews and great-nieces.
The family will hold a celebration of Sandy’s life on November 9 at 2:00 p.m. at her home in Asheville. Call 828-280-4454 if you need further information.
