Dick Umbaugh, Barbara Moore, Nancy Bear, Carthel Crout

Carthel Crout

 Williamston – Arlar Carthel “Coach” Crout Jr., 81, husband of Sharon Lee Proctor Crout, passed away on November 29, 2024.

 Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Arlar Carthel Crout, Sr. and Edna Virginia Ford Crout. Carthel attended Gardner-Webb University and received his bachelor’s degree from Mars Hill University. He earned a master’s degree in administration and supervision from Clemson University. He was a proud veteran, serving in the US Army Reserves for 35 years and retiring with the rank of Command Sergeant Major.

Carthel was a teacher, head football coach, and athletic director at several schools throughout South Carolina, including Palmetto High School in Williamston, during his long career in education. He was Anderson County Coach of the Year and coached in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas and North South All-Star Game. He retired from D. W. Daniel High School in 2004.

 After retirement, Carthel was elected to Town of Williamston Council. He was also elected mayor of the Town of Williamston and served a four-year term. Carthel was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Williamston.

 In addition to his loving wife of 57 years, he is survived by daughters, Lee Ashley Crout and Leslie Crout Hill (Matt); grandsons, Chase Hill and Riley Hill (Kirsten); and great-grandson Cason Hill.

 He was predeceased by brother, Jon Stanley Crout.

 

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 pm Wednesday, December 4 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, December 5, at Calvary Baptist Church, Williamston. Burial will follow at 1:00 pm at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

Nancy Bear

Nancy Jeanne Bear of Anderson, 63, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2024.

 Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Sara Alene Garner Bear. She was formerly employed with AnMed Medical Center and was a Baptist.

 Survivors include sister, Sherri A. Bear of Anderson and brother, Danny Bear of Pelzer.

 A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m.  Wednesday, December 4, in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

Barbara Moore

 Barbara Dale Phillips Jones Moore of Pelzer, 85, widow of Furman Moore, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2024.

 She was twice married, first to the late William Jones.

 Born in Greer, she was a daughter of the late Heyward M. and Minnie Azalee Underwood Phillips. She retired from Milliken and was a member of First Baptist Church Piedmont.

 Survivors include daughters, Debra Kelley and Cathy Peck, both of Pelzer; sister, Sara Flynn of Blue Ridge; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family received friends December 2 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with the funeral service following at 3:00 p.m. in the mortuary chapel.

 Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Dick Umbaugh

Richard Lee “Dick” Umbaugh of Pelzer, 87, husband of the late Brenda Joyce Chandler Umbaugh, passed away Friday, November 22, 2024.

 Born in Apollo, PA, he was a son of the late Samuel Alfred and Violet Kane Umbaugh. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Augusta Road United Methodist Church, Pelzer.

 He is survived by children, Randy Gene Umbaugh of Middleburg, FL, Kelly Susan North of Taylors and Rodney Scott “Dutch” Umbaugh of North Charleston; brother, Allen Umbaugh of Avonmore, PA; sister, Doris Bassett of Cabot, PA; nine grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 1:45 pm Saturday, December 7, at Augusta Road United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm in the church. Burial will be in the Greenville Memorial Gardens.
