The Anderson County Coroner’s office investigated a motor vehicle crash Monday that resulted in the death of a woman from Greenville who was reported as missing on Dec. 2.
According to Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore, the single vehicle crash occurred sometime between Dec. 2 and Dec. 3, on West Church Road near Alpen Way in Easley.
Shore said the victim, Sheila Walker Thompson, 54, of Greenville, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced deceased on the scene. Thompson died as a result of freshwater drowning and the death has been ruled accidental.
According to reports, the investigation indicated that the Thompson was the unrestrained driver of a Kia apparently traveling west on West Church Road and appeared to have lost control of her vehicle, traveled off the left side of the road and crashed into a creek submerging the vehicle in the water.
Thompson was reported as missing to Greenville County Authorities by her family after she went missing on Dec. 2. An individual that was assisting the family, located the victim’s car in a creek partially submerged under a bridge. The family was also searching in the area after receiving information that the victim’s cellphone had “pinged” in the area and were on scene at the time of the discovery.
The Anderson County Fire Department , Medshore Ambulance Service, Anderson County EMS, Anderson County Technical Rescue Team, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Office of the Coroner responded to the bridge on West Church Road on Monday.
The investigation is on-going by the Anderson County Office of the Coroner and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
