The Anderson County Coroner’s office is reporting that the number of suicides in Anderson County are up during the first month of 2025.
According to a news release, the Anderson County Office of the Coroner responded to 37 suicides in 2024. The release states that so far in 2025, the office has already responded to six suicides in less than one month, accounting for sixteen percent of the total number from last year.
Coroner Greg Shore reminds the Anderson County Community that there is help for anyone contemplating suicide. The National Suicide Lifeline is 988, which is available to call or text 24/7.
The South Carolina Department of Mental Health is another resource within the county that offers many different services to help someone get through a mental health crisis.
“Mental Health is a subject that is not regularly talked about, which is why some people think that they have no other option when they are feeling helpless,” Coroner Shore said. “I want to encourage the public to reach out to your friends and family members to let them know that you are there to be a listening ear if they ever need someone to talk to.”
Many times, family members of someone who commits suicide did not notice any signs leading up to the event,” Shore said. “That is why it is important to check in on your friends and family who seem to be happy and healthy because they could be suffering in silence.”
Coroner Shore also wants people to regularly talk about mental health so that we can break through the stigma of mental health crisis, and people will feel more comfortable reaching out for help.
