Three fire departments responded to a huge field fire Saturday afternoon on West Georgia Road. Firefighters from South Greenville, Piedmont, and West Pelzer responded. Quick action by firefighters prevented the fire from destroying a nearby mobile home. High winds and very dry conditions contributed to the quick spread of the fire. Approximately 70 wildfires were reported in South Carolina according to the South Carolina Forestry Commission. The largest, in the Carolina Forest area near Myrtle Beach, was spread over 2,000 acres and remained largely uncontained as of Tuesday afternoon. A wildfire near Tryon and Saluda in North Carolina spread to more than 600 acres in Polk County near the South Carolina border.
