Celebrating the Mustang Mascot

Palmetto Mustang Mascot exhibition opens April 3
An exhibit celebrating the 75 year legacy of the iconic Palmetto High School Mustang Mascot will open next Thursday, April 3 at the Williamston Municipal Center.
The exhibit, “Celebrating the Legacy of the Palmetto Mustang Mascot: A Community Journey!” is the culmination of countless hours of research, planning, and heartfelt collaboration – a true community effort, the organizers said.
It is a joint effort of local artist/art teacher Thomas Addison and local historian/photographer Jack Ellenburg, with help from many others.
Opening night will include a reception and special program with little-known history about the Mustang Mascot, along with photography, art, personal recollections and contributions from around the community.
“It’s a chance to connect with the past, celebrate the present, and inspire the future,” said Addison. “Whether you’re a proud Mustang alumni or simply a history enthusiast, this exhibition promises an unforgettable evening. Don’t miss out on this celebration of tradition and community spirit!”
“The exhibit brings together generations of students, both past and present, to honor the legacy of the distinctive Palmetto Mustang,” said Ellenburg. “This is going to be an exciting ride for all Mustangs students, faculty, staff and fans!”
The exhibit and opening night program is open to the public and is free for anyone who would like to know more about the local high school mascot including its origin, which was as early as 1950, four years before the combined Pelzer-Williamston High School was named “Palmetto”, and how it has been used through the years.
In addition to photos and other examples of the Mustang mascot, there will be items and photos on display that show different ways it has been used, including pencils, T-shirts and even painted on the Big Creek Water Tank located on Hwy. 29.
While the exhibit will focus on the mascot, there will also be a display of old year books, sports schedule posters, an old football helmet from the 1960s and other items
“Join us as we ride through 75 incredible years of history with the Palmetto Mustang Mascot Exhibition,” the organizers said.
The Opening Night Program and Reception, which will include personal recollections, will be held Thursday, April 3rd from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Williamston Municipal Center.
The exhibit will be on display at the Municipal Center through May and can be seen during regular business hours and other evening hours when Town Hall is open for meetings and other activities.
