The Town of Pelzer remains without a town clerk following the recent resignation of Cheryl Bates, who stepped down last week after more than seven years of service.
Bates’ departure, given with short notice, left the town without a central administrative figure. The town clerk’s responsibilities encompass nearly every aspect of Pelzer’s day-to-day operations – including payroll, licensing, records management, grant coordination, and serving as a key point of contact for both residents and town officials.
A Special Called Meeting of Pelzer Town Council was scheduled for Wednesday, April 23, at 4 pm at the Pelzer Gym. According to the public notice, council members planned to enter Executive Session to discuss a “personnel matter.” Since topics discussed in Executive Session are confidential, it is not confirmed whether the town clerk vacancy will be among those addressed. While public notice of the meeting is required under state law, members of the public are not permitted to attend or observe Executive Session proceedings.
State law prohibits public disclosure of discussions held in Executive Session. While any decisions made must be voted on in open session, the council may choose whether or not to announce the outcomes.
