MORTON
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest related to a fatal shooting in Belton on Friday. Following an investigation by ACSO Detectives, Damaruis Lamont Morton, 23, was charged with Manslaughter and Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime after an altercation at an apartment along Glenwood Street.
According to reports, Detectives interviewed Morton throughout the day on Friday (June 13) and their investigation pointed to him shooting a man.
According to the Anderson County Coroner’s Office, the victim has been identified as Jaheil Dyiir Thompson, 23 of Newberry.
Reports indicate a woman was also inside the apartment at the time
According to the Coroner’s Office, the victim died as a result of gunshot wounds to the chest and the case has been ruled a Homicide. The investigation indicates that the victim was involved in a domestic altercation with another individual at the residence when the shooting occurred and the victim did not live at the residence.
Morton was booked into the Anderson County Detention Center and faced a judge Saturday afternoon. Morton is facing outstanding and unrelated charges in Greenville County as well.
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Belton Fire Department, Medshore Ambulance Service, and Anderson County EMS responded to a report of a person with a gunshot wound at around 3:40 am Friday morning.
The investigation is on-going by the Anderson County Office of the Coroner and the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.
