The Town of Pelzer will have three council seats and the mayor’s seat open when election time comes around in November.
Books are now officially open for candidates who intend to run for one of two at-large council seats and to fill an unexpired term for an at-large council seat. The mayor’s seat is also open.
Seats for Councilmembers Mike Matthews and Donna Ide are up this election. Also the unexpired council term is the result of the recent resignation by Councilman Cruz West. Pelzer Mayor Will Ragland recently stated that he will complete his current term as mayor but does not intend to run for reelection. Chase Smithwick has announced that he is running for mayor.
Filing period for the two at-large town council seats, one at-large town council seat to fill unexpired term, and mayor seats officially opened at noon on Friday, August 1. Books will close at noon on Friday, August 15.
Filing location is Pelzer Town Hall, located at 103 Courtney Street. Filing hours are Monday – Friday 9 a.m – 5 p.m.
(Since Pelzer currently does not have a Town Clerk, actual Town Hall hours may vary. Pelzer Planning Commisson Chair Laura Rainey has been opening the office on a limited basis to provide some services and process business license applications.)
For potential candidates, the Statement of Intention of Candidacy (SIC) form is required for filing and is available in the “Candidate Information” section of scVOTES.gov and at the Town of Pelzer Municipal Building.
The filing fee for town council is $25. Filing fee for Mayor is $50. Filing fees are paid at the time of filing by candidates seeking the nomination. Filing fee checks should be made payable to the Town of Pelzer.
Candidates are also required to file a Statement of Economic Interests and a Campaign Disclosure online with the State Ethics Commission at http://ethics.sc.gov.
Failure to file these documents may result in a candidate fine but will not disqualify a candidate from the election. Contact the State Ethics Commission for more information.
