Two 15-year-old female Wren High School students have been charged with Assault and Battery 2nd Degree following an incident that took place at the Palmetto – Wren High School football game last Friday.
According to reports, on Friday, August 22, Williamston Police School Resource Officers (SROs) and other officers assigned to the Palmetto High School football game responded to an altercation in the school stadium parking lot. Officers determined that several female students were involved in a fight that resulted in a 15-year-old female Palmetto High School student being injured and transported to the hospital.
Williamston Police Chief Kevin Marsee said the incident was handled on scene by School Resource Officers. Following a review of camera footage and interviews with witnesses and those involved, SROs determined on Monday, that two female Wren High School students were the primary aggressors in the altercation.
The investigation also revealed the assault was the result of mistaken identity and that the aggressors believed the victim was another student with whom they had an ongoing dispute.
Working in partnership with officials from Anderson School District One, School Resource Officers placed both Wren High School students on trespass notice from Palmetto-area schools. Both juveniles were charged with Assault and Battery 2nd Degree and the charges have been referred to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice for handling in Family Court.
“We take these types of events seriously and remain committed to acting diligently to maintain the safety of our schools,” Chief Marsee said. “The Williamston Police Department values our strong partnership with Anderson School District One, and we continue to work closely with school administrators to ensure a safe and secure environment for all students.”
“The Williamston Police Department is grateful for the assistance of our SROs, Wren High School officials and Anderson School District One staff in helping our officers bring this case to a quick resolution,” Chief Marsee said. “WPD and Anderson School District One remain committed to ensuring the safety of all students and maintaining a positive environment for learning and growth.”
