Gilbert-Funeral service for Glenda Swygert Hughes, 85, was conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 13, 2025 at Shiloh United Methodist Church with Rev. John Kronz, Rev. Ken Prill, Rev. Noble Miller, and Rev. Debbie Miller officiating. Pallbearers were Timothy Price, Nathan Price, Scott Milliken, and Mike Daugherty. Burial followed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Priceville Road Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 12, 2025 at Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Historic B-L Chapel. Mrs. Hughes passed away Monday, September 8, 2025. Born in Columbia, SC, she was the daughter of V. L. “Spark” and Lovelle Price Swygert. She graduated from Gilbert High School where she was the first female student body president in SC. At age 19, after graduating from Columbia College, she began her career teaching 8th Grade Math in Gilbert. She was a teacher and librarian for over 35 years. She married the love of her life, Philip Hughes, September 11, 1960. For 65 years, they grew and loved each other, celebrating their life at every opportunity. Later she became interested in Library Science and got her Masters from USC. She excelled at story-telling and encouraged her students to “discover and enjoy the treasures of the library.” In 1975 she was awarded the North Carolina Terry Sanford award for Innovation and Creativity in Education. She was Teacher of the Year at West Pelzer Elementary, Cedar Grove Elementary, and S. Ray Lowder Middle School. A member of Alpha Delta Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa, the South Carolina Librarians Association, National Education Association and the South Carolina Education Association, she always encouraged her companions and students to leadership and excellence.
Glenda was very active in her community, primarily through her church. Born and raised a Lutheran, she was involved in Lutheran Women in Mission. Later in life as a member of Grace United Methodist Church, she participated in United Methodist Women and was awarded the United Methodist Women Lifetime Achievement Award. Through United Methodist Volunteers in Mission she helped communities in Costa Rica, Panama, and Mexico. She was active in hurricane relief efforts in South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana. After retirement she became a team leader for the Society of St. Andrew, harvesting and sharing thousands of pounds of food for hungry communities in South Carolina.
Returning to Cotton Hollow, her childhood home, in 2019, she focused her life on friends, family, and her new church, Shiloh United Methodist, and her yard, ever expanding the flower beds with day lilies, Lenten roses, and many other plants.
Surviving include her husband of 65 years, Philip L. “Phil” Hughes; son, Philip Hughes, Jr. (Alice); 2 grandchildren, Catherine Louise Hughes and Stewart Price Hughes (Ruthanne); 1 great granddaughter, Sage Elanor Hughes.

Ronald Hedstrom
Ronald George Hedstrom of Piedmont, 77, husband of Norma Jean Mielke Parisi Hedstrom, passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2025.
Born in Chicago, IL, he was a son of the late George Milton and Margaret Vivian Swanberg Hedstrom. He was the retired owner of Hedstrom Insurance Agency, a member of Piedmont Presbyterian Church, and a veteran of the United States Army.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by son, Cory Hedstrom of Piedmont, daughter, Courtney Hedstrom of Greer, son, David Anthony Parisi of Athens, GA, and daughter, Heather Parisi Powers of Piedmont; seven grandchildren and sister, Barbara Fletcher of Plano, TX.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 21, at 2:00 p.m. at Piedmont Presbyterian Church.

Kathy Horne
Kathy Irene Hood Horne of Pelzer, 73, passed away Saturday, September 13, 2025.
Born in Williamston, she was a daughter of the late William George Hood, Sr., and Edna Elizabeth Suddeth Hood. She retired from Kemet.
Survivors include sons, Mark Horne and Brian Horne; five grandchildren; brother, Charles Hood; and sister, Louise Harris.
The family will receive friends Thursday, September 18, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

Butch Stone
James Milton “Butch” Stone of Pelzer, 66, husband of Delise Ayers Stone, passed away Monday, September 15, 2025.
Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Troy Stone and Marcelle Stone McCullough. He was the owner of City Scooters and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Savannah Lynch, Crissy Haguewood, Angela Mitchell, and Nancy Minniear; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
The family will receive friends Saturday, September 20, from 1:00 – 2:45 p.m. at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with the funeral service following at 3:00 p.m. in the mortuary chapel. Burial will be at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

Wendell Lester Ellison of Williamston, 81, passed away Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late Walter Lester and Ethel Mae Holland Ellison. He was a farmer, a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, and a veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors include brother, Alton Ellison and sisters, Jane Cothran, Dot Dickerson, and Bobbie Brooks.
The family received friends September 14 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with the funeral service following in the mortuary chapel. Burial with military honors was at Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Belton.
