Interns working with Piedmont Historical Preservation – Melon Foundation Grant
Last spring, the Piedmont Historical Preservation Society (PHPS) was invited to participate in a Mellon Foundation – funded internship program administered through the University of South Carolina Upstate.
The partnership officially began this fall with eight student interns working on a range of projects for the PHPS. The ten-week internship includes five onsite interns, Ava Baker, Matthew Earnhardt, Sean Southard, Jolena Wallace, and Naomi Aviles, who are processing and organizing the Society’s archival collections.
Three additional offsite interns, Emma Brown, Thomas Herzog, and Ashley Wilson, are transcribing historical documents for future research access.
Although the internship spans ten weeks, the Mellon Foundation grant supports a three-year internship program, which may allow the Society to continue hosting interns in future semesters.
In addition to providing valuable assistance to PHPS’s ongoing archival and research initiatives, the interns are receiving hands-on training in various aspects of the public history field under the guidance of PHPS volunteer historian and archivist, Joe Hursey.

Please join the Piedmont Historical Preservation Society at 2 pm, Friday, November 7, in the Historic Piedmont Community Building, 3 Main Street, Piedmont, to meet the team and hear why they are excited to be a part of this amazing program preserving thousands of Piedmont and Upstate related documents and artifacts.
