An incident originally reported as a hunting related shooting in Anderson County has been determined to be the result of negligence.
On October 19, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) determined that the incident in question was not hunting-related. At that time, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office took the lead in the investigation, with SCDNR continuing to assist and work closely with the ACSO throughout the process.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, as the investigation progressed, evidence and information gathered by detectives led them to believe that family members of the victim were involved. After a thorough review of the evidence and following later confessions, it was determined that a family member had negligently discharged a firearm from an adjoining property without a proper backstop, which resulted in the victim being struck.
After a few days of discussion, the victim chose not to press charges against their family member for negligently discharging the weapon. The victim is still recovering from the incident.
