Joe Self

Joe Franklin Self, of Pelzer 89, husband of the late Mary Beatrice Hensley Self, passed away Friday, January 2, 2026.

Born in Johnson City, TN, he was a son of the late Willie Washington and Martha Flo Miller Self. He was a U.S. Army veteran, formerly employed with Pet Dairy and a member of New Beginning Church.

He is survived by son, Terry Self; sister, Loraine Sexton; one grandson.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 8, from 12:00 to 1:45 pm at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with the funeral service following at 2:00 pm in the mortuary chapel. Burial will be at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Mary Chapman

Mary Alberson Chapman of Pelzer, 99, widow of Charles Furman Chapman, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2026.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Alberson, Sr. and Beulah Kelly Alberson. She retired from Stone Manufacturing and was a member of Beech Springs Church.

The family received friends  January 6 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with the funeral service following at in the funeral home chapel. Burial was at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Jeanette Harris

Dale Jeanette Owens Harris of Pelzer, 87, passed away Friday, January 2, 2026.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Richard Vandeen and Lonie Davis Owens. She retired from Cushman Mills and was a member of Beech Springs Church.

She is survived by special nephew, Bill Owens; special cousin, Rachel Riddle and special friend, Dee Kelley.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 9, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at Beech Springs Church with the funeral service following at 2:00 pm. Burial will be at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Sammie Jo Hembree

Sammie Jo Belt Crumley Hembree of Pelzer, 75, passed away Monday, January 5, 2026.

Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late Hiram Earl Belt, Sr. and Letha Sanders Belt. She was a member of Cedar Shoals Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons, Jeff Crumley and Steve Crumley; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild and one on the way.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, January 8, at 11:00 a.m. at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Geneva Roberts

Pelzer – Grace Geneva Roberts, 97, wife of the late James Roberts, passed away Monday, December 29, 2025.

Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late James Frank and Ollie Cordella Davis West. She retired from Kendall Mills and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

She is survived by daughter, Jayne Mahaffey; grandson, Drew Mahaffey (Amanda); great-grandchildren, Magnolia and Moses Mahaffey; brother, Mike West (Marian); sister-in-law, Brenda West; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers, Charles West (Elaine), Doug West, and Johnny West; sisters, Joan Babb and Frankie Andrews (Sam); and an infant sister.

Visitation was held Saturday, January 3, from 1:30 to 2:45 pm at Tabernacle Baptist Church. The funeral service followed at 3:00 pm in the church. Burial was at Pine Lawn Cemetery.

Charlie L. Spelts 

Charlie L. Spelts, 99, of Greenville, South Carolina, husband of the late Inez Staton Spelts, died on Friday, January 2, 2026.

Charlie was a proud Navy Veteran, serving in the Pacific during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of The Judson Masonic Lodge and of the Hejaz Shrine.

He is survived by a son, Dr. Frank Spelts (Anne) of Leesburg, Georgia; a daughter, Charlene Spelts-Hartley of Piedmont, South Carolina, three grandchildren, Rev. Dr. Melissa Hartley of Huntsville, Alabama, Dr. Raybun Spelts of Thomasville, Georgia, and Dr. Anna Spelts Helmeci of Richmont Hill, Georgia; as well as one great-granddaughter, Ansley Caroline Helmeci.

A celebration of life is to be scheduled at a later date. Charlie will be laid to rest in the Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum of Robinson Memorial Gardens in Easley, South Carolina.

Martha Browning

Williamston – Martha Alewine Browning, 62, wife of 28 years to Thomas Erwin Browning, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2026.

Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late Tommy and Ailene Hilton Alewine. Martha had retired after 36 years in the Lab from AnMed Health. She attended Calvary Baptist Church where she was active in Mission Group #5, Needles & Thread Sunday School Class, and an unofficial group called the Sassy Ladies.

For those who knew Martha, even though she had been through many health issues throughout her life, she exhibited a can-do attitude, a smile, and a Christian spirit. As a spouse, she was that “Eve” who filled the void to make life complete. To her children, she was kind, selfless, compassionate, and served with a joyful heart. Martha will be missed, yet her family will move forward carrying a small piece of her everywhere they go.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by son, Michael Browning; and daughter, Elyse Browning; sister, Sheila Sears (Paul); and niece, Alexis Sears.

She was predeceased by a son, Patrick Browning.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm, Wednesday, January 7, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
