New Disc Golf Course features special baskets
Volunteers and teams from across the Upstate met Saturday for a trial run, invitation-only tournament to try out a new disc golf course being constructed in Williamston. The course features a new disc golf basket made in New Zealand and is the first in the State to have the basket.
Disc golf, trail extensions will be opening soon in Williamston
Williamston will soon have a Disc golf course located right in the center of town.
Work has been underway on the new professionally designed course and it has already been tested by disc golf players from across the Upstate.
Disc golf is an accessible, usually free, outdoor sport consisting of a teeing area and a target, where players throw specialized discs into elevated metal baskets in the fewest strokes, similar to traditional golf.
Like traditional golf, it is played on 9 or 18-hole courses, and requires three main discs, a putter, midrange, and fairway driver to navigate obstacles like trees and terrain.
According to Williamston Mayor Rockey Burgess, the new 18 hole course in Williamston features state-of-the-art baskets, incredible natural terrain, gorgeous habitat and scenery and natural obstacles that make every hole fun and challenging.
The course is designed by Cory Wickline of AnotherRoundGreenville, Disc Golf and Taproom. Volunteers (disc golf enthusiasts) from across the upstate helped clear the course and met Saturday for a trial run, invitation-only tournament.
“More than 70 teams showed up to test it out,” Burgess said.

The course features a new disc golf basket designed and made in New Zealand and it is the first course in the State to have the basket, which turns out to be a big draw for disc golf enthusiasts, Burgess said. “Williamston is the first disk golf course in the state to have these new baskets from New Zealand. That makes us pretty special.”
Mayor Burgess said, “This isn’t just dropping a few baskets in a field. This is a thoughtfully designed course that takes full advantage of the beautiful landscape we’re blessed with.”
“We are super grateful for the AnotherRoundGreenville team and their willingness to jump in and help with courses,” Burgess said. “This new course in Williamston needed a big push to get ready for the grand opening soon and these folks and many others before them, showed up and worked to make it happen. These people and so many others are the reason that the Upstate of SC is the best!”
The Town of Williamston partnered with Developers of Big Creek Station to bring the popular sport to the area and build the new course.
The course is located adjacent to property that once housed the Town’s water treatment plant behind the fire department.
Plans for a new mixed use commercial development called “Big Creek Station” have been underway since 2023.
Work to cleanup and ready the old treatment plant for a new life has been ongoing since then and according to Burgess, the developers plan to have the facility open in coming months.
Big Creek Station is owned by a private ownership group and will soon offer facility rentals for all types of events, open green space and gathering areas, rotating food trucks and local vendors, community events, markets and more.
It will also be the hub area for the free community disc golf course.
Burgess said a ribbon cutting and official opening for the new disc golf course will be held soon. The ribbon cutting will also include official opening of two new extensions of the Mineral Spring Trail.
Mineral Spring Trail being extended
Mineral Spring Trail extends from Mineral Spring Park, along Big Creek, to the old water treatment plant, soon to be known as Big Creek Station.
In the other direction it extends toward the Veterans Park. That portion of the trail has been closed due to damage to the bridge over Big Creek, which was damaged during Hurrican Helene last September. The bridge is currently in the process of a “temporary repair”, according to Mayor Burgess.
A crane was brought in last week to lift the bridge off of current pilings so that that new pilings can be created. The work will be done over the next two months, he said.
The Veterans Park trail leads to a new extension to the Mineral Spring Park Trail which was completed in October, 2025. The new extension from the Veterans Park crosses Williams Street and proceeds toward a trailhead to be located in the new Saratoga Oaks subdivision which is now under construction.
While usable, the new extension is not officially open, partially due to the Veterans Park bridge being closed for repairs. (see related photo)
Burgess said the Town is also planning to eventually build another bridge over Big Creek to connect the new paved Mineral Spring Trail extension to a trailhead to be located in the Saratoga Oaks subdivision. The subdivision is located on Williams Street and Brock Drive.
The trailhead will include 20 public parking spaces in the subdivision. An unpaved walking nature trail will connect the subdivision to the Mineral Spring Trail extension.
The Town is currently finishing up a project to extend Mineral Spring Trail from Big Creek Station. The new concrete extention is along what was an unfinished “nature trail” portion of the trail toward Minor Street (behind the town maintenance shed area).
Burgess asked residents to avoid the area while construction is ongoing. “We’ll let you know as soon as it’s ready to enjoy,” he said.
