During their meeting Monday, Williamston Town Council approved first reading on a $7,260,333 budget for fiscal year 2026-27.
The proposed operating budget shows a seven percent increase over the current year. The millage rate will remain the same at 122.5 mills and there will not be a tax increase.
It reflects a three percent across the board salary increase for town employees.
General fund revenues total $4,704,518.
A public hearing and second reading on the budget will be held at the regularly scheduled Town Council meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 1.
Council also approved second reading on an ordinance prohibiting convicted sex offenders from being in city owned parks and recreation areas and a budget amendment to allow the purchase of portable radios for the Williamston police and fire departments.
The “gently used” radios are being purchased from the Gallad Group for $78,790 and are needed due to Anderson County going to a different system which the town’s current radios are not compatible with.
School Resource Officer (SRO) Sgt. Sam Hopkins was recognized for a promotion to Lieutenant. Hopkins has been with the Williamston Police Department since 2014 and will lead the SRO program which includes four officers.
Williamston Police Chief Kevin Marsee said the SRO program is critical and allows for an immediate threat response should one arise. He said the SRO officers build relationships with kids in the schools.
Envision Williamston Executive Director Roberta Hamby reported she is getting estimates for a new handicap ramp for the Minor Street side of the Williamston Municipal Building.
Hamby also reported that Envision Williamston is replacing three wayfinding signs and getting a new sign for Brookdale Park. The sign project is being funded through an Anderson County Accomodations Tax (ATAX) grant.
Duke Energy has provided a grant which will be used for handicap accessories for a new restroom facility planned for Mineral Spring Park, Hamby said.
There are two upcoming events scheduled for May. The Pig in the Park Barbecue Cookoff and Festival will be held on May 15 and will include a concert in the park and the Campin’ Creekside event will be held May 22 & 23.
Mayor Pro-Tem Chris Alexander presided over the meeting in the absence of Mayor Rockey Burgess.
