On June 28, Carolina Day will commemorate and honor the South Carolina militiamen who repelled British Naval forces to secure the state’s independence. The victory at the 1776 Battle of Sullivan’s Island is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, holidays in the United States.
Six days later, the United States of America was established with the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
The United States of America is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the country this year.
Anderson County is also celebrating its 200th anniversary this year.
Anderson County was officially established in 1826 with the division of the historic Pendleton District into the Pickens District and Anderson District in December of 1826.
There are special activities planned locally to celebrate both of these historic events.
The Town of Williamston Freedom Festival will be held Saturday, June 27.
On Sunday, June 28th, a special celebration is planned from 2-5 pm, at the Piedmont Riverfront Park, 550 River Road to celebrate Carolina Day.
The Town of Pelzer and Town of West Pelzer are co-hosting a free July 4th Celebration on July 4th at the Monkey Park from 6 pm-until. Free hot dog plates will be served while supplies last. There will be a free kids zone and live music by Slammin’ Sammy and the Knockouts.
Anderson County is also planning special activities to celebrate including a special Carolina Day event at Wren Park in Anderson on Sunday.
