Although a local TV news station was reporting a dam on the Saluda River at West Pelzer (?) was being monitored for a possible breach, The Journal has not been able to confirm that there was ever any real threat. The Saluda River at Pelzer crested at 8.67 ft., just over the crest on Oct. 4 of 8.5 ft, but well below the flood stage of 12 ft. The photo above was made on Monday. The National Weather Service reported the following 72 hour storm total rainfall ending 7 am Tue Nov 3: Mountville, Laurens was the highest in the area with 6.09 inches. Upstream of the Pelzer Dam, Powdersville reported 4.35 while Piedmont reported 3.64 inches. The rainfall did cause local creeks and the Saluda to rise and there was considerable ponding on roads and low areas, however no major problems reported.
