Williamston to host upcoming events – Freedom Celebration to feature two national artists

During their meeting Monday, Williamston Town Council held second reading on ordinances to rezone property and annex property. Council also held first reading on a 2024 election ordinance.
Coming open this year are the Mayor’s seat (Rockey Burgess), Town Council Ward 3 (Tabitha Austin) and Town Council Ward 4 (Chris Alexander) seats. The election will be held in conjunction with the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Books will be open for filing beginning August 1.
Kevin Norris requested use of Mineral Spring Park sometime in May or June for a community event for Red Velvet Life, which provides a platform for local performers and musicians. The event will be family oriented, Norris said. A date will be nailed down soon.
Envision Williamston Executive Director Roberta Hamby updated Council on upcoming events.
A community yard sale, “Junk in the Trunk”, will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, April 6. Cost to reserve a spot is $10. Email EWBoardMembers@gmail.com or register at Town Hall.
Working on Williamston Town Cleanup Day will be held on Saturday, April 20 from 8 am to 12 noon. Volunteers are welcome. For information contact Hamby at Town Hall. A cleanup of the railroad sidewalk tunnel on Gossett Drive will also be held at the same time. Kyle Dufoe is coordinating cleaning up trash and debris from the tunnel and planting wildflowers on the railroad embankment.
A ribbon cutting for Carolina Family Services will be held at 5:30 pm on Thursday, April 25.
A Cinco De Mayo event is planned for May 4 in Mineral Spring Park. Pig in the Park barbecue festival and cookoff is planned for May 17 and 18. A concert will be held on Friday night with Easton Gowan and Eric Scott Band, Hamby said. The event will include a market, food vendors and a pickleball tournament.
The creekside campout event will be held Friday, May 24. The American Legion Post will provide breakfast for campers on Saturday morning. The event will include a movie night and other activities.
Council approved second reading to rezone property at 604 Belton Drive from residential commercial to R3. The zoning will allow a developer to build six townhomes on the property located between Belton Drive, Parker Street and Hwy. 77.
Council approved second reading to annex property at 12 Brown Street. Mayor Rockey Burgess is a fifty percent owner of the property and recused himself from the discussion and vote. The annexation includes two properties, one bordering Brown Street and one bordering Brown and Courtney Streets.
Council approved a resolution recognizing April as Fair Housing Month.
Council approved an updated lease with Medshore Ambulance for use of the old rescue squad building on Anderson Drive. The current lease of $1000 will increase to $1,500 per month with a two year agreement.
Council approved the appointment of Kyle Dufoe to the planning commission.
Mayor Rockey Burgess announced that the Town’s Freedom Celebraton will be held on Saturday, June 29. In addition to fireworks, the event will include a concert featuring national recording artists Gyth Rigdon and Tracielynn.
The event will also include a cruise-in, Bobbers On Big Creek, a market, golf cart parade and other activities.
