Pelzer approves new trash service provider

During their meeting Monday, Pelzer Town Council approved two ordinances related to elections and decided to change their trash service provider,

Council approved final reading on an amended ordinance transferring election to the Anderson County Voter Registration and Election Commission. The transfer will take place for 2016. Council also unanimously approved final reading on an ordinance changing the town election date to the first Tusday in November and filing informatin from petition to intent of candidacy.

Council approved a new contract for trash collection which will take effect in December.

Waste Industries was the low bid at $43,411.20 annually. The company will provide one trash cart per household customer in addition to their service. Waste Industries representative Jennifer Rackley answered question from council members and residents.

The company will not be picking up leaves and limbs, bulky waste, construction and demolition waste, dead animals, hazardous waste, medical waste, body waste, yard waste, industiral waste or toxic substances, trees, earth, abandoned vehicle, vehicle parts or large equipment.

Mayor Steve McGregor said the company will “provide better service for less money.” The contract is for two years.

During public comments, Gilbert Garrett asked council about a water and sewer rate increase in 2013 to help pay for refurbishing the town’s water tank.

According to Garrett, the town approve the increase to help pay for approximately $168,000 cost of the project. He asked if there was going to be a rate reduction since the project has been completed.

Garrett said, “when you finish paying for a car, the payments go away.”

Mayor McGregor said the town will take a look at it and get back with an answer.

Jimm Harrison said he would like for the current council to “go out with something strong” and suggested they look into state and DHEC ordinances to see what can be done to clean up the town.

There was some discussion about the sewer line project and how complaints are being handled.

Will Ragland said the Palmetto High School “Wild Oats” play and the Mill Town Players “Robin Hood” receved awards at a state competion held at Furman University over the weekend.

There was also some discussion about a holiday promotion. It was eventually decided the town will sponsor a Deck Your Door contest for residents of the town. Details will be announced soon.
