Heavy smoke in the South Greenville County and Eastern Anderson County areas including Williamston and Pelzer is apparently the result of a contolled burn currently underway in Union County. Anderson County Emergency Prepardness Director Taylor Jones said he is aware of the burn and that he is trying to find out more details. According to Jones a weather condition known as a thermal inversion is keeping the smoke from rising into the atmosphere and closer to the surface, resulting in the smokey conditions being seen. At approximately 6:30 pm Thursday, heavy smoke could be seen in the South Greenville area. Within the hour it had filtered into the Williamston area. According to reports, Laurens County was also seeing similar conditions.

The SC Forestry Commission is reporting the US Forest Service is carrying out a prescribed burn in the Sumter National Forest that includes 2,560 acres.

Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
