Farmfest to celebrate local farmers products

Opening event for farmers market

Farmfest, a celebration of local farmers, will be held in Mineral Spring Park this Saturday, April 30th, from 9AM – 1PM. The event will feature farm related displays and local products as well as entertainment and educational sessions.

The event will feature bluegrass music with Jack Ellenburg, Nancy Carroll, and friends. Jody McFarlin of Rock Farms has arranged a display of antique tractors. Free garden activity books from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds will be given to the first 100 children.

At 9:30, Tillman Stevens of Hoppy Quackers Farm will teach a class on raising rabbits. At 10:30, Robin McGee of Earthwise Learning Center will lead a plant walk. Both educational sessions are free.

Farmfest is sponsored by the Palmetto Farmers Market, Earthwise Learning Center, and EarthSkills, LLC. Earthwise focuses on herbal education and self-sufficiency classes, and EarthSkills is a wilderness self-reliance school. Both organizations will have tables at the event.

Other vendors include Bella Vita Farm, Possum Kingdom Kreamery, Happy Critters Ranch, EarlyBird Farms, Bio-Way Farm, Miss BeeHaven Honey Bones, Pound Cakes by Dorcus, Hampton Farms, Carolina Grassfed Beef, Rock Farms, The Lazy Farmer, Cedar Knoll Farms, Forx Farm, a 4H Homesteading group, Heavenly Seed, and Hey Bo/Sassy Sow BBQ.

Products include eggs; beef; chicken; pork; goat milk and cheese; Gouda made from local cow’s milk; rabbit meat; vegetables; fruit; pound cake; coffee; freshly baked bread; jams; jellies; relish; soap; lotion; other hand-made personal care products; plants; seeds; boiled peanuts; dog treats; and honey. Licensed vendors will be selling chicks and quail.

The Palmetto Farmers Market’s regular season begins on May 5th. The market will be held at Mineral Spring Park every Thursday from 3:30 – 7PM, through September 1st.
