The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will hold a public information meeting Thursday, March 24, from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Williamston Municipal Center at 12 West Main Street regarding proposed improvements to the intersection of US 29 and S-96 (Welcome Road).

Proposed improvements include a roundabout intersection, curb and gutter installation, and drainage improvements. Nearby S-4-144 (McAlister Road) and two local roads (Cantrell Road and Crappie Drive) would also be impacted by the proposed improvements.

The purpose of the public meeting is to provide an opportunity to review and discuss individually, with representatives from the SCDOT, the proposed improvements to the intersection. Another purpose of the meeting will be to gather local knowledge from the public or any interested organization regarding historic or cultural resources in the area. The purpose of the project is to bring the intersection in conformance with current design safety standards.

The meeting will have a drop-in format with displays for viewing, informational handouts, and comment forms. A formal presentation will not be given at the meeting and verbal comments will not be taken.

Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and provide comments regarding the proposed improvements. Project information, including meeting materials and comment forms, will also be available on the SCDOT project website https://scdotgis.online/US29safetyproject.

Obtaining Right of Way would begin early next year with construction beginning Spring 2023 and completion date of approximately twelve months.

Additional information concerning the project may be obtained by contacting the SCDOT Project Manager Mr. Shawn Salley at 803-737-1949. Persons who may require special accommodations may contact Betty Gray at 803-737-1395 or GrayB@scdot.org.
