Williamston Town Council approves zoning amendments, hears audit report

Williamston Town Council approved zoning amendment changes and heard the annual audit presentation during their meeting Monday.
Auditor Andrew Coleman, of Greene, Finney, & Gauldin told Council that the Town had received an unmodified opinion, which he said “is the best opinion you can receive”.
In his presentation, Coleman said the town Fund Balance had increased by $678,000 from $2,526,000 to $3,204,000. The restricted fund balance for victim’s assistance and nuisance abatement has $27,000.
The General Fund balance is at 73 percent of 2023 actual expenditures and 86 percent of 2024 budgeted expenditures. The GFOA recommends a minimum of 16.7 percent or two months, Coleman said.
Council approved second reading on a zoning change on five acres of property on Minor and College Street. The change from Institutional to Planned Development will allow developers of Big Creek Station to continue with their plan to develop the old water treatment plant.
Council also approved second reading on five amendments to the zoning ordinance.
Cahpter 90, Article IX, Section 90-287 addresses accessory uses, primarily restricting the use of shipping containers for storage.
Chapter 90, Article V, Sect. 90-123 addresses transitional, group and supportive housing in Office Commercial Districts.
Chapter 90- Article II, Sect. 90-27 are related definitions.
Chapter 90 – Article V, Sect. 90-126 excludes transitional and supportinve housing in Institutional Zoning unless approved by “sepcial exemption.”
Chapter 90, Article V, Sect. 90-119 addresses the Multi-Family Residential (MFR) zoning ordinance which will allow group, transition and supportive housing in MFR zoned areas.
