The Anderson County Museum will feature an exhibit titled “Not-So Secret Societies” through April 2024. Americans have long been fascinated with so-called “Secret Societies” and the roles they might play in the shadows of our social, political, and economic development.
The histories of groups like the Freemasons, Knights of Columbus, Odd Fellows, and others provide insight into the social mores of their members, the issues they cared about, and the varied striation of the societies in which they lived over time. We find significant crossover among members, competition between groups, as well as instances of cooperation. Not-So Secret Societies will illuminate the ways these groups addressed the challenges of their times, how their leaders and presence figured in our county’s history, and how public opinion was shaped by both their secrecy and public charity.
The museum is also unveiling the latest Veteran’s Hall blocks in the Andersonians in War exhibit. There are blocks still available. More information can be found on their website at www.andersoncountymuseum.sc.gov or by calling the museum.
