During their meeting Monday, Williamston Town Council approved second reading on annexation of properties located on Roberts Blvd. and SC Hwy. 20, behind the Southern Bell (AT&T) phone building and Lander Library.

Mayor Mack Durham said the properties are being brought into the town limits at the request of the property owners and that they are being zoned highway commercial. The properties are contiguous to the town and are being brought in under the 100 percent petition method.

Prior to the vote, Williamston Town Council held a public hearing on the annexation requests during which very few questions were asked by the public.

Only one resident commented, asking about the location and stating that the town already has enough property in the city to take care of. Another question was asked about zoning.

The first annexation request unanimously approved by council includes two tracts of land comprised of approximately 17.3 acres which are listed on the Anderson County Tax Map as 244-00-05-017-000 and 244-00-05-021-000. The property owner is listed as Linda L. Roache.

The second annexation request includes two tracts of land comprised of aproximately 10.8 acres which are listed on the tax map as 244-00-05-018-000 and 244-00-05-020-000. Property owners are listed as Truman G. McAlister, Patricia Holcombe, Ken Major and Franky Major.

At the beginning of the meeting, Council went into executive session to discuss pending litigation and an economic development issue.

Interim County Administrator Rusty Burns and Economic Development Director Burris Nelson were also included in the behind closed doors session.

Upon returning to public session, Mayor Mack Durham said no action was taken in the executive session.
