The Williamston Police Department is warning residents of a “Publisher Clearinghouse Winner Sweepstakes” scam in which fraudulent Kroger Co. checks are being included with the “winners” letters. According to reports, the fraudulent letters are being received in the mail by individuals in multiple states. Financial institutions and other check cashing entities are being advised not to cash the checks. Residents are being advised to be cautious of any phone call, email or mailed offer that seems too good to be true or requesting help for a heart pulling situation in which the person is not known.
