During a special called meeting held last Tuesday (Jan. 19) afternoon, Williamston Town Council approved second reading on an ordinance setting the date for a special election and approved a property transfer.
The Town of Williamston will hold a special election on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 to fill the Ward 2 Council seat vacated by Rockey Burgess when he took office as mayor. Books opened for filing on January 22 and will remain open until 12 p.m. on February 1. The filing fee is $50.

Council also approved second reading on an ordinance to convey property at Brock Lane and Ridge Court to Shannon L. Kinman and Melissa Kinman. Council approved first reading on the ordinance during a special meeting in December then tabled second reading at the Jan. 4 meeting of council. The strip of property, owned by the town, was being deeded to the Kinmans due to a dispute as to the exact location of the property line and complicated by the fact that the Kinmans may have built improvements on town property. Amendments made to the ordinance included a requirement of a $500 reimbursement to the town for stain on a fence on the property and a requirement that the property be surveyed at the expense of the Kinmans.
Both ordinances were approve unanimously 4-0.

Councilman Chris Alexander was selected to serve as Mayor Pro Tem during the Jan. 4 meeting of council which included the swearing in of new mayor Rockey Burgess, new councilmember Tabitha Austin and Alexander.
