William “Bill” Whitner King, Evelyn Whelchel, Annette Smith, James McCuen, Sara Jane Kelley, Walt Young

Walt Young 

Walter Manning (Walt) Young, 75, of Pelzer, S.C., died Friday, September 15, 2023. 

Born in Abbeville, S.C., on September 21, 1947, he was a son of the late Walter Harrison Young Jr. and the late Mary Frances Pack Young. 

Since 1967, he was the owner-operator of Factory Direct Memorials on Hwy 8, in West Pelzer. He was also the former owner of Palmetto Windows and Siding Company. 

He had a love for car racing, and was the owner of Young Brothers Ford Racing. He, along with his most notable driver, Steve “Hot Rod” Lamance, won many Multi-Track Championships. 

Walt loved to hunt and fish. He had many prize coon hunting dogs and held several patents for his fishing lure designs with his company, Young Lures. 

He is survived by his son, Matt Young, daughter, Shelley Young Lewis, two grandchildren, and his sister, Sheila Hiles. 

 A funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 19, at Guthrie Grove Church of God of The Abrahamic Faith. Burial followed in the church cemetery. 

 In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Walt M. Young Memorial Fund, C/O Guthrie Grove Church of God, 403 Guthrie Grove Church Rd., Pelzer, S.C. 29669. This fund was established in his memory for the upkeep and future endowment of the church cemetery, a cause that was very special to him.

Sara Jane Kelley

Sara Jane Cothran Kelley, of Pelzer, 86, wife of the late Paul Emerson Kelley, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2023.

   Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter the late Thomas Arabian “T.A.” Cothran, Sr. and Mary Blanche Hendrix Cothran. She was a member of Washington Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include her sons, Paul E. Kelley, Jr. of Pelzer and Rev. Jason Jay Kelley of Eugene, OR; daughter, Diana Jane Spears of Warrenton, VA; brothers, Billy Cothran, Ricky Cothran, and Glenn Cothran; sisters, Linda Coker and Joyce Coker all of Pelzer; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 22, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Gray Mortuary. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

James McCuen

Pelzer – James Alan “Mack” McCuen, 71, of Pelzer, husband of Wanda Allison McCuen, passed away Monday, September 18, 2023.

He retired from Michelin following 41 years of service. James was a devoted Clemson Tiger fan for 60 years and an avid fisherman.

In addition to his wife of 52 years, he is survived by daughters, Terri Leigh Jones (Marty) of Williamston and Jeannie Lollis (Matt) of Anderson; and grandchildren, Autumn Mikayla Smith of GA and Chloe Alyson Smith of Fountain Inn.

The family will receive friends 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 22, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with the funeral service following at 3:00 p.m. in the mortuary chapel.

 Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson.

Annette Smith

Ruby Annette Hughes Smith, of Piedmont, 80, wife of the late Charles Marvin Smith, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2023.

Born in Marietta, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Pauline Porter Hughes. She retired from Holiday Inn and was a member of Ooleny Baptist Church in Pickens.

Survivors include her daughters, Sharon Durham of Williamston, Tammy Sullivan of Easley, Melissa Franks of Anderson, and Cindy Dyal of Ware Shoals; sister, Freddie Seaborn of Pickens; brother, Brody Hughes of Easley; eleven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held September 17 at Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, with entombment following .

Evelyn Whelchel

Mary Evelyn Howard Whelchel, of Belton 87, wife of the late W.T. “Dub” Whelchel, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2023.

   Born in Milner, GA, she was a daughter of the late W. J. Howard and Mary Bishop Wiley.  She was a homemaker and a member of Bessie Road Baptist Church.  She was a coach for South Greenville Youth Association.

She is survived by her sons, Tom Whelchel of Anderson and Donnie Whelchel of Starr; and daughter, Robin Davis of Pelzer; brothers, Ted Wiley of Pelion and Randy Wiley of West Columbia; sister, Carolyn Brown of Daleville, AL; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held September 19 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

The funeral was September 20 at Bessie Road Baptist Church, with burial at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

William “Bill” Whitner King 

Belton- William “Bill” Whitner King, 93, husband of Margaret Turner King, Resident of Murdock Rd., entered into rest Friday September 15, 2023 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born on February 26, 1930 in Belton to the late John Mattison and Nell Shockley King, he was a graduate of Forest College. He served in the United States Army and was a retired Real Estate Broker.

A member of Belton Presbyterian Church, he served as a Deacon and an Elder. He was a member of the Belton Lions Club as well as the National Association of Realtors.

Surviving other than his loving wife of the home, are his children, Angela Louise King of Columbia, Carol King Jackson (Chesley) of Columbia; his brother Zane King of Belton; his grandchildren, Brian Dickert, Carlyle Jackson (Kathryn) and Carrie Jackson; his great grandchildren, Jackson Dickert, Riley Dickert, Turner Jackson, William Jackson, Graeme Jackson, and Bailey Jackson. He was predeceased by his brothers, Bob King and David King.

Graveside services with Military Honors were conducted Sunday, Sept 17 at 3:00 PM from the Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Tom Malone officiating. The family receive dfriends immediately following the service.

The family is at the home.
