GCSO Officer Involved Shooting

Greenville County Sheriff’s Office and SLED are investigating an incident in which one person was shot by a GCSO Deputy.
According to reports, just before 11 pm Saturday, Greenville County Communications received a call for service regarding a disturbance and possibly an assault at S. Piedmont Highway and Cemetery Street.
When deputies arrived on scene they encountered two individuals; at least one of which was armed. The incident resulted in an officer involved shooting where one Greenville County Deputy fired and a person was shot. The person was subsequently pronounced deceased on scene. Another person was detained and taken into custody for assault; that information will be released at a later time.
SLED was requested to investigate as standard with all officer involved shootings. Any further questions regarding the shooting will be deferred to their agency. As standard with GCSO protocol, a critical incident community briefing will be released on March 12th.

According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), following an exchange of gunfire, an armed male subject, later identified as Robert Lee Campbell, 51, was shot and died at the scene. No deputies were injured. SLED was requested to investigate by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.
SLED conducts law enforcement officer involved shooting (OIS) investigations at the request of the agency involved in the incident or the agency with jurisdiction. When requested to investigate an OIS, SLED’s goal is to conduct a thorough, independent criminal investigation as timely as is possible under the circumstances. SLED agents will conduct interviews with all potential witnesses. SLED will collect all relevant evidence and will forensically test such evidence as needed. Information gathered in the SLED investigation of the incident will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors.
The incident in Greenville County was the 4th officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2024.
This is the 2nd officer involved shooting for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office this year.
In 2023, there were 43 officer involved shootings in South Carolina. The Greenville County
Sheriff’s Office had 3 officer involved shootings last year.
