GCSO – Arrest made in incident that resulted in officer involved shooting

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) has made an arrest in connection with an incident that resulted in an officer involved shooting on Friday, January 26. According to reports, Greenville County Communications received a call for service regarding a disturbance and possibly an assault at S. Piedmont Highway and Cemetery Street.

Deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office responded and encountered an armed male subject in the area. According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), following an exchange of gunfire, the armed male subject, later identified as Robert Lee Campbell, 51, was shot and died at the scene. No deputies were injured.


Deputies arrested Larry Doyle Simmons, 38, after learning he assaulted a victim with a wooden board spurring a 911 call to police. Simmons has been charged with 3rd degree Assault and Battery.
According to the GCSO, Simmons did not engage in the shooting with law enforcement and was not struck by gunfire during the officer involved shooting. Following the arrest Simmons was transported to the Greenville County Detention Center for a bond hearing.
Another person at the scene, identified by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office as 51-year-old Robert Lee Campbell was shot and subsequently pronounced deceased.
