Margaret Lewis

Margaret Eloise Hendricks Lewis of Belton, 72, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2022.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of Evelyn Lucille Chastain Hendricks of Belton and the late Leonard Glenn Hendricks. She was formerly employed with Estes Mill.

   In addition to her mother, she is survived by sisters, Nancy Watson of Pelzer, Kathy Hendricks of Belton, and Pam Brown of Port St. Lucia, FL; brother, Buck Hendricks; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Friday, July 22, at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Leon Paxton

Piedmont – Amos Leon Paxton, 76, husband of Susan Amelia Ingram Paxton, passed away Monday, July 4, 2022.

Born in Piedmont, he was the son of the late W.J. and Virginia Erlee James Paxton. He retired from Delta Woodside and was a member of Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith. Leon loved to fish and hunt.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Jonathan Paxton (Olivia) and Kevin Paxton (Peggy), all of West Pelzer; sisters, Kathy Hood of Piedmont and Debra Smith (Gary) of Williamston; grandchildren, Andrew Miller (Jessica) of Easley and Alexandria Wigington (Bo) of Piedmont; great-grandchildren, Noah Miller and Ben Wigigton; and brother-in-law, Gerald Ausburn of Park Hall, MD.

He was predeceased by grandson, Tyler Paxton; sister, Gloria Ausburn; and brother-in-law, Robert Hood.

The family received friends Tuesday, July 12, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith, with the funeral following at 1:30 p.m. at the church. Burial was at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Gordon Todd Stanley 

Gordon Todd Stanley, age 56, of Williamston, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022, at his home.

Born July 18, 1965, in Chillicothe, OH, he was the son of Henry M. and Patty Stanley, Jr. and David and Shirley Ann Stacy DeMarco.

He was the president of Direct Rep Services, LLC. He was a member of Second Chance Church.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Anne English Stanley; son, Richard Aaron Smith; daughter, Angelina Jo Stanley; brothers, Henry M. Stanley, III and Eric Autenrieth.

The family received friends July 15 at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service was in the Chapel. Burial followed at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

Angel Stinnett

Williamston – Angela Ree Black Stinnett “Angel,” 59, wife of Joe Patrick Stinnett, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Ralph Steele and Bobbie Nell Tucker Black.  She was formerly employed at JP Stevens, Parker Plant, and attended Piedmont Church of God.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters, Tashia Reeves (Kenneth) of Williamston, and Angela Deree Clayton (Mark Robinson) of Donalds; brother, Ralph Edward Black (Sandy) of Piedmont; and grandchildren, Alex Emanuel Black of Williamston, and Marcus Hayden Robinson of Donalds; a host of nieces and nephews; and her dog, Blaze.

 She was predeceased by her brother, William Calvin Black, and sister, Tracie Darlene Wofford.

A memorial service was held Saturday, July 16, at 5:00 p.m. in the chapel at Gray Mortuary, with visitation to following.

Ayden James Chastain

Ayden James Chastain, 12, passed away on July 6, 2022. 

Surviving are his parents, James Ronald Chastain and Larissa Dawn Lewis; a brother, Mason; and grandparents, Lewis and Becky Floyd, Michelle Lewis, and Terry McDonald. 

Services were held on Saturday, July 16 at Agape Baptist Church, Piedmont. Visitation was from 12:30 – 1 PM, with the memorial service after.

Bobby Scott

Bobby Ray Scott of Piedmont, 88, husband of the late Carol Chasteen Scott, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2022.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Andrew Emmett and Vara Bradberry Scott. He was a U.S. Army and Korean War veteran. After retirement from J.P. Stevens, he owned his own carpentry business. 

   He is survived by sons, Wayne Scott of Layton, UT and Robin Scott of Greenwood; daughters, Derallin Morrow of Piedmont and Debbie Moore of Cross Hill; twelve grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was July 17 at Gray Mortuary. The service followed in the mortuary chapel. Burial was at Greenville Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Mary Howard

Mary Elizabeth Shackleford Howard of Piedmont, 82, wife of the late George Andrew Howard, Sr., passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2022.

Formerly of Pelzer, she was born in Anderson County to the late Garvin Lee Robert and Eunice Waters Shackleford. She was a homemaker and a member of the former Pelzer Wesleyan Church (now Alive Wesleyan Church).

Survivors include daughter, Cynthia Jean Ellison of Williamston; son, George Andrew “Andy” Howard, Jr. of South Point, OH; sister, Brenda Sue Pridmore of Pelzer; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held July 18 at Gray Mortuary. The funeral followed in the mortuary chapel, with burial at Big Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Diane Mitchell

Pelzer – Lucy Diane Thurston Mitchell, 75, wife of the late Willie Ray Mitchell, passed away Monday, July 11, 2022.

Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late James Franklin and Mary Elsie Lollis Thurston. She retired from Cushman Mill, Beattie Plant and was a member of Washington Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Donnie Alverson of Piedmont; daughter, Tammy Lopez of Laurens; brothers, Ray and Richard Thurston of Pelzer; sisters, Debbie Freeland (Jerry) of Seneca, Annette Epps (Stan) of Iva, Nancy Baptista of Iva, and Kathy Ebright of Pelzer; granddaughter raised in the home, Reneé Butler (Eli) of Pelzer; grandsons, Jessie Alverson of Piedmont and James Brown of Fountain Inn; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Randy Alverson; and four brothers, Carroll, Doug, Steele, and Mike Thurston.

The family received friends on Tuesday, July 19, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the home of Eddie Alverson, 709 Old Hundred Road, Pelzer.

   A graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 20, at 1:00 p.m. at Washington Baptist Church, Pelzer.

Lakon “Mutt” Newby

Williamston – Lakon “Mutt” Newby, 86, husband of the late Mary Jean Ford Newby, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2022.

 Born in Huntsville, AL, he was a son of the late Percy Eugene and Juanita Miller Newby. He retired from Owens-Corning Fiberglass and was an active member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. Mr. Newby loved to sing and sang in the church choir. He entertained Senior Citizen Groups as “Razor” in the dynamic duo Switchblade and Razor, was a member of the King and Queen Club and The Country Christians. For his family, friends, and all who knew him, his tender-hearted love and goodness warmed us all towards living a more beautiful life. He left a sparkling path of joy and beauty wherever he left a footstep.

He is survived by his daughters, Millie Harmon (Tim), Karen Saxon (Scott), and Tracie Hawkins (Mark) all of Williamston; sisters, Brenda Page of Belton, Linda Duncan of Cowpens, and Gerald Glenn of Hartwell, GA; and grandchildren, Mary Catherine Saxon, Jay Saxon, and Reed Hawkins.

He was predeceased by three brothers and four sisters.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 21, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the church, with burial at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
