Sallie Ann Moreland (Pharr), Marie Weedon, Doug Chapman, Linda Coker, Curtis Haggerty, Elaine Evans

Elaine Evans

Piedmont – Elaine Eugenia Smith Evans, 82, wife of Marshall Kenneth “Bub” Evans, Sr., passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2024.

Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late Harvey Lee and Ellen L. Brown Smith. Mrs. Evans retired from Bigelow and attended Beaverdam Baptist Church. She loved being a wife and mother and quilting.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Marty Evans (Jo) of Pelzer; siblings, Mary Ellen Rardon of Piedmont, Jimmy Smith (Maxine) of Rock Hill, and Maxine Thomas (Ray) of Williamston; numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Evelyn Smith, Kent Smith, Dorothy Foxx, Barbara Ann Maroff, and Terry Lee Smith; and special cousins, Jerry Brown and Becky Johnson.

Visitation will be held Monday, February 19, from 12:00 to 1:15 p.m. at Beaverdam Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 1:30 p.m., with burial at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beaverdam Baptist Church Capital Needs Fund, 1904 Beaverdam Road, Williamston, SC 29697.

Curtis Haggerty

Curtis Victor Haggerty of Piedmont, 81, husband of the late Mary Frances Riggins Haggerty, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2024.

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late Lois Haggerty Shiftlet. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the 101st Airborne as well as two tours in Vietnam. He retired from Michelin.

Survivors include his children, Curtis David Haggerty of Belton, Sherry Faulkenberry of Easley, and Tracy Berry-Elrod of Easley; eleven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Saturday, February 17, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Gray Mortuary, with the funeral to follow at 2:00 p.m. in the mortuary chapel. Burial will be at Greenville Memorial Gardens, with military honors.

Linda Coker

Linda Lee Cothran Coker of Pelzer, 83, wife of the late Marvin Thurman Coker, Sr., passed away Friday, February 9, 2024.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Arabian and Mary Blanche Hendrix Cothran. She retired from Brockman Automotive in Greenville and was a member of Washington Baptist Church.

   She is survived by her son, Marvin Thurman Coker, Jr. of Greenville; daughter, Sharon Klaren  of West Union; brothers, Billy Cothran of Belton, Ricky Cothran of Pelzer, and Glenn Cothran of Pelzer; sister-in-law, Joan Cothran of Pelzer; brother-in-law, Larry Coker of Pelzer; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held February 13 at Gray Mortuary.

The funeral will be Wednesday, February 14, at 12:00 p.m. at Washington Baptist Church, with burial to follow at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Doug Chapman

Lalen Douglas “Doug” Chapman of Pelzer, 87, husband of the late Ethel Frances Simmons Chapman, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2024.

   Born in Belton, he was a son of the late James and Rosie Ailene Kinard Chapman. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Hoechst Celanese, Grover, NC. He also attended the Church of God.

   He is survived by sons, William “Billy” Douglas of Pelzer and Johnny Dwayne Chapman of Westminster; daughter, Robbie Gale Smith of Pelzer; brother, Robert Kenneth Chapman of Piedmont; sisters, Nettie Davenport of Honea Path, Linda Ann Roper of Piedmont, and Margie Porter of Liberty; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm Thursday, February 15 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. The service will follow at 12:00 pm in the mortuary chapel. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Marie Weedon

Cynthia Marie Payne Weedon, 59 of Westminster, wife of Ralph Weedon, passed away Friday, February 9, 2024.

   Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Odell and Harriett King Payne. She was formerly employed with Metromont Materials and was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters Sarah Harper of Lyman and Rachel Gilmore of Piedmont; brothers, Odell and Chris Payne, both of Boiling Springs; and three grandchildren. 

Visitation was held February 13 at Friendship Baptist Church, 5600 Highway 81 North, Williamston. The funeral followed  with burial in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Sallie Ann Moreland (Pharr) 

Sallie Ann Moreland (Pharr), of Pelzer, SC, died peacefully Monday, February 12 at the Rainey House in Anderson. Close family were by her side.

Sallie, originally from Spring City, Pennsylvania (PA) was born on August 24, 1945. Growing up there she excelled in school and graduated from Spring City High School. She was a lifelong learner and while educating others, she was always improving herself. She received an Associate Degree of Arts in Humanities from Montgomery County Community College in 1979 and a Bachelor of Science in Special Education and Elementary Education from Gwynedd-Mercy College in 1982. Sallie also received as Master of Science in Education from Clemson University in 1987 and continued her education there, receiving an additional 30 hours of course credit by 1998.

Sallie loved educating the children of Upstate South Carolina, working for over 30 years in education with long service in Townville, Greenville, and Powdersville. She retired from Powdersville Middle School in May of 2006 after 22 years of service for Anderson County School District One.

She was a nationally recognized educator who took pride in the success of her students. Her commitment to them was to be the best teacher she could and to honor that commitment she would learn as much as possible about being a great teacher. She set the example for other teachers by never stopping her own education and by working two years to become a Nationally Board Certified Teacher, receiving this certificate in 2001.

Sallie was also a Professionally Recognized Special Educator (PRSE), a Special Education Department Team Leader and received a Certificate of Achievement from The Clemson Writing Project. She was the Teacher of the Year at Townville Elementary School for the 1990-1991 school year. In addition, she was the Pennsylvania State Secretary of Phi Beta Lambda, 1981, and was selected for the Who’s Who, American Universities and Colleges, 1981.

Sallie was happily married for over 37 years to Edward Moreland, and they spent their retirement traveling and enjoying each other’s company. She enjoyed the theater and musicals and served as a cast member for local shows in Anderson in the 1980s. She often mentioned how much she enjoyed meeting Senator Joe Biden in the early 2000’s. She was a member of the Anderson Garden Club and the Anderson Travel Club.

Sallie is preceded in death by her parents, Drake and Helen Pharr and her sister Barbara Alexander. She is survived by her devoted husband of 37 years, Eddie, two nephews, Michael and David Alexander (Mathieu), her great niece, Lindsey Alexander and her sister-in-law, Judy (Moreland) Glover(Dennis).

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 N Highway 81, Anderson, SC 29621. The family will greet relatives and friends at the mortuary from 1:30 P.M to 2:45PM. Burial will take place in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Anderson, SC.
