WILLIAM BURNETT TALBERT, JR.

William Burnett Talbert, Jr., 84, of Piedmont, husband of Jane Kramer, died Tuesday, September 20, 2016.

Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late William Burnett Talbert, Sr. and Marie Witt Talbert.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from PYA/Monarch Sara Lee Corporation.

He was a member of Sandy Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Ann T. Waters and Martha T. Hinson; one stepdaughter, Christina Lyons; son, William Roy Talbert; nine grandchildren; and twin brother James H. Talbert.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Martha G. Talbert.

Funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 24 at Sandy Springs Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

JERRY MONTGOMERY

Jerry Wayne Montgomery, 74, of Pelzer, husband of Valerie Dean Montgomery, died Saturday, September 24, 2016.

Born in Atlanta, he was a son of the late Johnny Wayne and Lois Greene Montgomery. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was the retired owner and agent of Pioneer Life Insurance, Greenville, and a member of Bible Baptist Church in Simpsonville.

Additional survivors include daughters, Deb Terrell of Lavonia, GA, Shelia Ross of Fountain Inn, Anita Seibert of Fountain Inn, Linda Avery  of Canton, GA; son, Greg Montgomery of Pelzer; sisters, Nancy Cleveland, Diane Smith; brother, Lee Allen Montgomery; 13 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held.

Donations may be made to Valerie Montgomery to assist with medical expenses.

HILDRETH STROM

Hildreth Gettys Strom, 90, of Greenwood, widow of Wilber Milton Strom, Jr., died Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Wesley Commons Health Care.

Born in Calhoun Falls, she was a daughter of the late Erwin Finley, Sr. and Lillian Hook Gettys. She retired from Dorn Banking Co as Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors.

She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Greenwood.

Survivors include her son, James Steven “Steve” Strom  of Anderson; sisters, Vera H. Hood of Ormond Beach, FL, Margaret S. Pyle of Waynesboro, VA; brothers, Erwin F. Gettys, Jr. of Greensboro, GA, W. David Gettys of Columbia, James “Jim” Gettys of Strongsville, OH; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Monday, September 26, in the Chapel of Wesley Commons in Greenwood.

GARY CHARLES  McGUFFIN, SR.

Gary Charles McGuffin, Sr., 67, of Abbeville, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016 at Self Regional Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, he was the son of Dorothy Barrett McGuffin and the late Charles W. McGuffin.

He was a veteran and retired from U.S. Army.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Susan Whetzel McGuffin; two sons, Michael McGuffin of Anderson and Gary McGuffin, Jr. of Williamston; brother, Jerry McGuffin of Anderson; sister, Debbie McGuffin of Anderson; and six grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Friday, Sept. 23 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Interment followed at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery with military honors.

COY JOHNSON

FAIR PLAY – Coy Castle Johnson, 85, husband of the late Gloria Ethelyn Ward Johnson, passed away Friday, September 23, 2016.

Born in Saucier, MS, he was a son of the late Isaac Willie Johnson, Sr. and Laura Mae Whittington Johnson. He retired from the U.S. Air Force following 21 years of service and was a Vietnam veteran. He was formerly employed with the Greenville U.S. Postal Service and was a member of Carpenter’s House, formerly McNeely Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include sons, Adrian Coy Johnson of WA, Douglas Carlton Johnson of Perkinston, MS, Denver Lee Johnson of Green Bay, WI, Kevin Raye Johnson of Easley and Dale Alan Johnson of Piedmont; daughter, Diane Johnson Roper of Piedmont; sisters, Juanita Smith, Donna Lou Pack, Troy Vee Dortch, and Lilly Grace Denning; brothers, Isaac Willie Johnson, Jr., Hilliard, Donovan and Kent Johnson; fourteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by son, Glen Keith Johnson; sister, Lola Mae Millhome; brother, Rex Johnson.

Visitation was from 1:00 to 2:30 pm Monday, September 26, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. A graveside service followed at 3:00 pm at McNeely Cemetery.

The family was at the home of son, Kevin Johnson, 100 Greencrest Way, Easley, SC 29642.

‘RUSTY’ SMITH

Leroy Archie “Rusty” Smith, Jr., 82, of Belton, husband of Dorothy Patterson Smith, died Tuesday, September 27, 2016.

He was twice married, first to Kathleen Guthrie Smith.

Born in Williamston, he was the son of the late Leroy Archie Smith, Sr. and Ellis Thrasher Smith.

He was a retired U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Army National Guard veteran. He was formerly employed with Owens Corning.

In addition to his wife of Belton, he is survived by son, Greg Smith of Asheville, NC; daughter, Kathy Pearson of Williamston; step-daughters, Tracy Brown of Greenville and Raquel Lemlick of Belton; step-son, Deforest Moody of Belton; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 29, at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

DORIS BROADWELL

PIEDMONT – Doris Willene Ford Broadwell, 90, wife of the late Lee Roy Broadwell, passed away Thursday, September 22, 2016 at her home.

Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late Roy P. and Pauline Cannon Ford. She retired from the J.P. Stevens White Horse Plant and was a member of Piedmont Wesleyan Church.

Survivors include nephews, Carthel Crout of Williamston and Stan Crout of Greer; several great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by son, Keith Broadwell; sister, Edna F. Crout.

A graveside service was held at 3:00 pm Sunday, September 25, at Greenville Memorial Gardens with visitation following the service.

JOBIE CHURCHILL SWYGERT, JR.

Jobie Churchill Swygert, Jr., of Piedmont, husband ot Lynn Bowles Ssygert, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2016.

Born in Leesville, he was son of the late Jobie Churchille Swygert, Sr. and Edythe Boland Swygert.

He was a member of Piedmont United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Memorial service was held Monday, Sept. 26 at Robinson Funeral Home, Powdersville Road, Easley.

NANCY PATRICK

MARIETTA – Nancy Sue Davis Patrick, 68, wife of Marvin N. “Bud Man” Patrick passed from this life on Thursday, September 22, 2016.

Nancy was born in Anderson County, daughter of the late R.L. Davis, Jr. and the late Mamie Sue Sargent Davis. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Marvin “Bud Man” Patrick, daughters, Vicki Lynn McWhorter (Ronnie) of Townville and Peggy Sue Weeden of Easley, granddaughter, Mackenzie Hope “Mac” Weeden of Charleston and a brother, Roger Davis of Marietta.

The family received friends from 2 to 3:30PM Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens. Burial will be private.

RUBY ELLISON

Ruby Ellison, 87, of Anderson, SC, died September 25, 2016 in Waterloo, SC, at the home of her sister-in-law, Myrtis Ellison.

Born May 1, 1929, she was the daughter of James David Ellison and Sarah Galloway Ellison (formerly of the White Plains Community of Anderson County and later of the Stony Point Section of Greenwood, SC). She was the granddaughter of Albert Henry “Sug” Ellison and Lou Stigall Ellison of White Plains, the great-granddaughter of David Ellison and Millie Reid Ellison.

Ruby is a Christian. She worked for Ryobi in Anderson, SC for 23 years and worked for Cracker Barrel after retirement.

She was the last member of her family and was preceded in death by two sisters, Geneva Simpson of Williamston and Beulah Jones of Anderson; six Ellison brothers, Johnny of Anderson, Willie and Walter of Waterloo, Homer of Charleston, Coleman of Laurens, and David of Saluda. She was preceded in death by several nieces and nephews and is survived by many nieces and nephews and their children.

The Ellisons will arrange burial at Guthrie Grove Church in Pelzer, SC at the family grave site.

WILMA CRAWFORD

BELTON – Wilma Beatrice Fleming Crawford, 87, wife of the late William Lee Crawford, passed away Monday, September 26, 2016.

Born in Belton, she was the daughter of the late Wilburn and Flora Clarke Fleming. She retired from Anderson County School District One and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Survivors include Lesia Vinson (Michael) of Pineville, SC; son, Tim Crawford (Teresa) of Belton; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Visitation was from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm Wednesday, September 28, at Trinity Baptist Church. The funeral service followed at 3:00 pm in the church. Burial was at Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

BETTY DuBOSE

PELZER – Betty Ann McMahan DuBose, 88, widow of Charles C. “Charlie” DuBose, passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2016.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Shockley and Georgia Ridgeway McMahan.  She was a retired third grade teacher from the Greenville County School District and a member of Faith Presbyterian Church.  She was a member of Hejaz Provost Guard Ladies Auxillary and former member of Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include daughter, Kathy Bumgarner (Greg) of Pelzer; son, Ben DuBose (Meg) of Marietta, GA; grandchildren, Marie DuBose Maynard, David DuBose, Zachary and Caleb Bumgarner; three great-granddaughters.

She was predeceased by a son, Tim DuBose; grandsons, Chris and Sean DuBose.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 29 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.  The service will follow at 2:00 pm in the mortuary chapel with entombment at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
