Kenneth Ray Fisher

June 6, 2023, Kenneth Ray Fisher, 76, of Piedmont, SC passed away of complications from a cardiac arrest, with his beloved wife, Helen, at his side.

Ken and Helen married in 1966 while he was stationed in Charleston, SC serving in the United States Air Force as an avionics technician. They resided in the Charleston area for several years before Ken received a scholarship to Southern Colorado State College in Pueblo where he earned a degree in automotive marketing and management. Ever the adventurer, Ken loaded up his wife, daughter, Marcia, and son, Greg, into a converted school bus for the cross- country move. One of his first priorities after arriving in Pueblo was to find a gospel centered church. His desire was always for his children to come to know the Lord and be raised in church.

After many more cross-country moves, Ken and Helen settled in Upstate South Carolina in the early 90’s. They became Pop-Pop and Gramma to Zachary, Kayli, Nicholas, Joshua, and Connor. Passionate about his grandchildren, he never missed a birthday party and Christmas morning didn’t start until he and Gramma arrived. His heart grew to overflowing though, as 17 great-grandchildren were welcomed. When foster great-grandchildren joined the family for a time, they became his own, too. His love for his grands and great-grands was evident and a hug and “love you” was required before parting ways.

Anyone who knew Ken could tell his generous spirit knew no end. He was known to frequently stop along the side of the road to help a stranded motorist. An expert mechanic and car enthusiast, he could fix just about anything with whatever supplies happened to be present.

New friends were made everywhere, even along the side of the road.

A good story or joke was always on the tip of his tongue. And they almost always centered around a car. Once named rookie of the year at the Woodruff dirt race track, he defied death many times while driving a stock car through the years.

Ken loved his Jesus. Being with his church family at Bessie Road Baptist Church, singing Southern Gospel music with his young couple’s group, teaching Sunday School, serving as an ordained deacon, and helping Helen run a church thrift store were some of the numerous ways he shared that love.

Born in the Quebec community of Lake Toxaway, NC, he was the youngest son of John and Addie Fisher. He had three brothers and three sisters. He also considered his lifelong friends, Marvin McDaniel, Tom Semro, and Darryl Schultz, as brothers. His favorite saying was probably influenced by his humble upbringing. He liked to say “I started with nothing, still got most of it.” Ken understood well how rich he actually was.

Ken was predeceased by father John Lewis Fisher and mother Addie Owen Fisher, brother Benjamin Fisher, and sisters Addalee Fisher and Katherine Mason.

He is survived by his wife, Helen (Sorrells), daughter Marcia Haddan (Michael), son Gregory Fisher, and grandchildren Zachary Haddan (Megan), Kayli Shockley (Christopher), Nicholas Haddan (Ashlee), Joshua Haddan (Katherine), and Connor Haddan.

He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Abigail, Caroline, Rayelyn, Tinsley, Natalie, Theodore, Austin, Phillips, Penland, EllieKate, Judah, Chester, Ashlyn, Benjamin, Addalee, and Jonathan. he leaves also his siblings Early J “Bud” Fisher (Betty), Elaine McCall (Sidney), Leon Fisher (Leon), and his sister-in-law Brenda Fisher, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service was be held at Bessie Road Baptist Church in Piedmont, SC on Sunday June 11, 2023 at 4:30 pm. Visitation began at 3 pm. He will be laid to rest at M J Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson, SC at a later date.

Those wishing to honor him may reach out to someone in need around you and help them. That’s what Pop would do.
